Ella Condon, Trace of Light, 20:00 min., video. Sound by Paul Greedy.
Trace of Light is concerned with light, its continual formation, degradation and reformation. Trace of Light reflects upon photography’s role to capture and transform light, both visible and invisible to the human eye. The installation involves a data projector, MDF board, and perspex. The light waves from the projector hit the MDF board and further refract to the perspex on the floor. The footage we observe is produced by a fast shutter speed and shallow depth of field, enabling us to see dust matter falling, illuminated by a trace of light. Through this captured light we consider light as shifting energy. Particles of dust are made visible to us through the camera. As energy forms, degrades and reforms, we are given an ability to connect to ancient light. Audible is the sound of radio waves and distant matter as it falls to the ground. Ancient light, the radio wave, is recorded. The work conveys a light trace as a reflection upon contemporary photographic practice; perpetually transforming.
